Interview with Vera Jane Cook about her book 'Where the Wildflowers grow'

Interview Questions:

1.      Where did the idea come from for the book? The idea didn't come from anything specific. I had written two other southern fiction novels and this book just came naturally after those. I think I really wanted to understand Rose and the kind of sexual confusion she experienced at a time when being 'gay' was so underworld and misunderstood. I wanted to give all the characters closure.
2.      What genre does your book fall under? I would have to say southern fiction is the genre but also women's fiction.

3.      Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? I might chose Sean Penn for Ryan, Anne Hathaway for Rose and Charlize Theron for Heather.

4.      What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Sexual confusion and family secrets tear apart the perfect American family in the 1960s.
5.      Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? My book is published by Musa,, a small traditional publisher.
6.      How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? At least a year.
7.      What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Any good Southern novel that revolves around family secrets.
8.      Who or What inspired you to write this book? Growing up in the 1960s, Tennessee Williams, my other two southern fiction titles, a love of the South.
9.      What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? It is very 1960s in terms of the way people lived, the strangeness of air conditioners, old cars, sexual prejudices, books people read, etc. Also, it's a family drama that delves into unfulfilled needs, self awareness, dishonesty and even loyalty.

 Blurb
Sexual confusion and dysfunction cause the unraveling of the perfect American family in small town Georgia in 1960.

Rose Cassidy's fantasy life is a haunting reminder that she's living a lie. So when she has the opportunity to act on those fantasies, she dives in without any thought to consequences.

Rose's husband, Ryan, has fantasies of his own, and his actions cause unimaginable hurt [pain] to the very children he tries so hard to protect.

When the happiness each member of the Cassidy family seeks so desperately to find is shattered by shame, guilt, and ultimately murder, they must each face the truth that lies deep within their souls.
